Cathy Smith is a registered professional nurse with over 30 years of acute and critical care experience. Cathy is a certified adult critical care clinical nurse specialist by background. Cathy has been with Sentara since 2004 where she has practiced as a CNS, Magnet Program Director, and most recently in the role of System Director for Advanced Nursing Practice and Patient Outcomes for Sentara Healthcare for the past 3 years.   
Cathy was originally a diploma graduate and has since completed her BSN, MSN, and most recently received a DNP degree from Old Dominion University in 2017. Cathy is committed to life-long learning.
Over the years, Cathy has served as site lead/coordinator for several system-wide interdisciplinary performance improvement initiatives including Medical Response Team, Sepsis, Hospice/Palliative Care, and Healthcare Associated Infection improvement projects. Cathy serves as an executive sponsor for several nurse-led practice forums including pressure injury and fall prevention committees. Cathy considers herself an “authentic leader” committed to having a presence, leading by example, coaching and mentoring team members, and always advocating for bedside nurses and improved patient care.
Cathy is involved in multiple scholarly activities, regularly participates in professional presentations at all levels; and has published several manuscripts on various topics. She is also an active member of the ANA, American Association of Critical Care Nurses, National and Virginia Association of Clinical Nurse Specialists; and VONEL. Cathy currently serves as Treasurer for VaCNS.
