VaCNS President's Statement Related to COVID-19
March 27, 2020
On behalf of the VaCNS, I’d like to thank CNSs and all of our multi-disciplinary medical colleagues for their continued dedication to quality patient care. I especially want to thank CNSs for your innovation and flexibility to provide patient care, support for nursing staff, and leadership for your organizations.
The VaCNS Board is working to provide you the information and resources that you need during this public health crisis.
- The VaCNS is forming a workgroup to collate resources for CNSs and Nurses who are faced with ethical issues surrounding COVID-19 and nursing practice. Anyone interested in participating in this workgroup should contact Marian Kyner, email@example.com, or Phyllis Whitehead, firstname.lastname@example.org by Monday, March 30. The group’s goal is to make resources available on our website and through Facebook within the next two weeks.
- Certifying bodies are currently closed for testing due to COVID-19. Gov. Northam signed an executive order allowing NP graduates to practice provisionally until they are able to take their certification exam. The executive order did not address CNS graduates. VaCNS contacted the Board of Nursing to ask whether new graduate CNSs would be able to practice immediately upon graduation and learned that new graduate CNSs may work as a CNS does but may not CALL themselves a CNS until they pass the certification exam.
- Due to uncertainties related to COVID-19, the VaCNS Board has decided to postpone the conference planned for August to the spring of 2021.
VaCNS will continue to support CNSs as you participate in managing the COVID-19 pandemic. I wish you and your family good health.
